Several situations were recently reported where uncontrolled traffic infringed TMA airspace, resulting in a potential risk of loss of vertical separation. These infringements occurred vertically, at the TMA lower limit, by pilots intending to fly VFR in the uncontrolled airspace below the TMA. The probable cause was inadequate altimeter setting by the pilots concerned.
VFR pilots are therefore reminded that it is their responsibility when flying in uncontrolled airspace to remain clear of any controlled airspace unless appropriate clearance has been obtained from the responsible ATC unit.
In order to prevent any involuntary airspace infringement due to incorrect altimeter settings, VFR pilots flying in the vicinity of TMA’s and especially below TMA’s are strongly advised to select the AD QNH of the relevant aerodrome (EBBR, EBOS, EBCI, EBLG or ELLX). The AD QNH can be obtained on the relevant ATIS frequencies or from Brussels FIC if ATIS would not be available.
