  Glider Areas Ardennes 2024

1   General

The Glider Areas Ardennes aim at replacing the MILFAG areas 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 as defined in AIP Belgium & Luxembourg ENR 5.5.

The Glider Areas Ardennes are on trial from 15 MAR 2024 till 15 OCT 2024.

All terms and details as described in the LoAs

remain in effect if not modified by this AIP SUP.

(1) Glider sector. Airspace class G during activation.
(2) Transponder carriage is not compulsory. Gliders equipped with transponders will read: A1477.
(3) Activated by NOTAM D-1 1600 (1500) at the latest.
(4) All non-military aircraft within this airspace need to be in contact with Saint-Hubert Radio on 122.180 MHZ or, for Belgian Air Cadets only, with Bertrix Radio on 130.130 MHZ.
(5) Any conflicting areas announced by NOTAM, except TSA25C and TSA26B, are excluded for glider use during activation. In case of simultaneous activation of Glider Area Saint-Hubert and TSA25C or TSA26B, both areas are usable at the same time. Pilots operating within TSA25C or TSA26B shall be aware of Class G airspace activation up to FL 065 included.
(6) Activation can be checked with Brussels FIC on FREQ 126.900 MHZ, TEL +32 (0) 2 206 29 49 or with Belga Radar on FREQ 129.325 MHZ, TEL +32 (0) 2 44 38204.
(7) End time may be up to SS, see §3 ‘Special Procedures’.

3   Special Procedures

Glider Areas Ardennes activity will be announced by NOTAM at D-1 1600 (1500) subject to exceptional military activity as decided by COMOPSAIR A3.2.

Activation timings may be until SS or end of Military Flying Window, whichever comes first.

After end of Military Flying Window, the Low Flying Area Golf structure becomes applicable as per AIP Belgium & Luxembourg ENR 5.5. The glider community as per § 4 may contact Brussels ACC Supervisor 1 HR prior end of NOTAM activation.

4   Responsibilities

4.1   Glider Area Saint-Hubert

During activities of Belgian Air Cadets at Bertrix, the Bertrix flight director, part of the Belgian Air Cadet squadron, is the primary coordinator with ATCC Steenokkerzeel or ACC Brussels (outside ATCC OPR HR).

Outside activity of Belgian Air Cadets, Saint-Hubert Radio becomes the primary coordinator with ATCC Steenokkerzeel.

Saint-Hubert Radio and/or Belgian Air Cadets Bertrix flight director must ensure all glider pilots are informed and familiar with the limits of the Glider Areas Ardennes, the procedures and the timings.

All non-military pilots shall maintain a listening watch on the Saint-Hubert Radio frequency or Bertrix Radio frequency for the Belgian Air Cadets.

4.2   Glider Areas La Roche and Malmedy

Saint-Hubert Radio is the primary coordinator with ATCC Steenokkerzeel or ACC Brussels (outside ATCC OPR HR).

Saint-Hubert flight director must ensure all glider pilots are informed and familiar with the limits of the Glider Areas Ardennes, the procedures and the timings.

All non-military pilots shall maintain a listening watch on the Saint-Hubert Radio frequency.
